NCsoft and Guild Wars…

Here we are again, at the cross roads of a security issue, born from a companies ill managed security provisions. My Guild wars account, that I haven’t logged into in over 5 months was hacked. The passwords changed and left your humble blogger unable to move forward. I would simply just say “whatever”, but we have sunk a lot of money into Guild wars over the years.

So, like any good consumer that hasn’t given out his password, and has actually added it to a keysafe, so he won’t forget it, I now must deal with support to get help back into my account, that I can only image has been stripped of it’s valuables. None the less, NCsoft asks for 4 bits of info….

What first and last name did you use when you created the account?

This one is easy, and also was part of the original email I sent, So, I know that this first email is nothing more then auto-reply.

What physical address did you use when you created the account?

The account was created in my situation about 4+ years ago… I lived in 2 different places around that time… so I gave them both.

What date of birth did you use when you created the account? (MM/DD/YYYY format)

Another simple question, go a-head on.

What are all the 25-digit retail access keys currently registered to your Guild Wars game account? (Please include the retail access keys from each campaign.)

Here is where NCsoft has totally lost any creditability as for security measures and begins to make me wonder if I will ever get my account back. See, the first box set was bought as I stated about 4+ years ago, I do not have that anymore, so the Original CD Key is then only listed in one other spot, the NCsoft master account… yes, you know the one that is hacked right now. With 3 other expansions, plus a  couple addons bought through the “Online store” and I have zero keys to list here.

What are the last 4 digits of the credit/debit card used to make any purchases for your account from the Guild Wars In-Game Store/NCsoft Store online? If you instead made purchases using PayPal®, what is the Transaction ID or the Invoice ID associated with the Guild Wars In-Game Store/NCsoft Store purchase? (if applicable)

This one shouldn’t be to hard, if it wasn’t for the fact that I switched banks twice around that time, and Have neither of them now. So, as  good citizen I have destroyed said out dated cards and I have no idea what number it was at all, let alone what bank.

So, as you see, it’s not looking good for me or my account. 4 expansions 2 addons, around $300.00 maybe gone, because someone out there found a way to hack NCsoft and NCsoft found a way to be below average in security methods.

Unfortunately, I have been waiting for “Guild Wars 2”, and it’s coming in November! However, this not so minor issue will prevent me from buying NCsoft products for quite a while.

My Recommendation is to pass on NCsoft products, and look at the vast world of other MMORPG and Free to play games out there.

http://bit.ly/coVinF – “Please understand that NCsoft only considers a “hacked” account to be the unauthorized access of an account resulting from a criminal act. ” (in other words, It's not our fault!)

And the coupe de ta, “Any items, currency, or experience lost in this incident will not be restored.” – “Account owners are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of their passwords and security of their accounts at all times.”

Yes, If i get my account back I will probably sell it or dismantle it.
